These are answers to common questions that individuals have about membership with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM):
How do I update my contact information with the AASM?
The easiest way to update your information is to log in to the Members Only section of the AASM Web site. Before you log in for the first time you must register to create a username and password. After you log in simply click on the “My Account” link and then click on the “Edit Information” link.
Where can I find my member number?
You can find your member number in these places: on the membership card that was mailed to you when you first joined, on your renewal invoice, and on the “My Account” screen when you log in to the Members Only section of the AASM Web site.
I want to renew my membership online, but I forgot my login information for the Web site. How can I get my login information?
Send an e-mail to the
membership department with your full name and you will receive an e-mail reply with your login information.
If I join the AASM in the middle of the year, will my membership last for the next 12 months?
No. Memberships expire at the end of December and must be renewed for the upcoming year. New members who join between October and December get the remainder of the current year and a full year of membership for the upcoming year.
I live outside of the U.S. If I become a member, will I still receive print copies of the two journals?
Residents of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico receive print copies of the journals. Residents of other countries can receive print copies of the journals by paying an additional $100 postage fee. All members also have full, online access to the journals.
I never received a recent journal issue. How do I get a copy of that issue?
You should first verify that the AASM has your correct mailing address. Visit the AASM Web site and enter your login information. Select “My Account” and verify that your address is correct.
You can send a claim for a missing issue within 45 days of that issue’s publication date. Fax your claim to (708) 492-0943, e-mail it to subscriptions@aasmnet.org or mail it to this address:
Journal
SLEEP Editorial Office or
Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine Editorial Office
One Westbrook Corporate Center, Suite 920
Westchester, IL 60154
If I update my address in my member account on the AASM Web site, will the journals automatically come to my new address?
Yes. The journals will be delivered to the address that you update in your AASM Member Account. You should update your address as soon as possible to ensure that the delivery of your journals is uninterrupted. If an issue is not delivered to you during the move, you can send in a claim to receive the missing issue.
Do you accept PO’s as payment for membership?
No. The AASM does not accept PO’s as payment. We accept checks and these credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.
Can I renew my membership or become a member over the phone?
No. You can join or renew online, or you can fax or mail to the AASM a membership application or renewal invoice.
What is the APSS?
The APSS is the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, which is a joint venture of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society. The APSS publishes the journal
SLEEP and organizes the SLEEP Annual Meeting.
I renewed my membership; why am I not listed in the new membership directory?
The list of members to be included in the Membership Directory is compiled on March 1 of each year. This is the same day when all members who have failed to renew their membership are dropped from the roster of active members. If you join or renew after March 1 you will not be included in the Membership Directory, which is mailed to members in the middle of June.
Why is my home address not included in the Membership Directory?
As a part of the AASM’s privacy policy, only the business address of members appears in the Membership Directory.
How much does it cost to join a section, and how many sections can I join?
Section membership is a free benefit for all AASM members. You can join any or all of the eight membership sections. You may vote and hold office, however, in only one section that you designate as your primary section affiliation. To join a section simply log in on the AASM Web site, select the “My Account” link, and select “edit” next to your section affiliation.
How do I apply for a student membership?
You will need a letter from your dean or supervisor that is printed on school or sleep disorders center letterhead, verifying your status as a student. Fax or mail this letter to the AASM with you membership application. If you
apply online, you will need to fax or mail the letter to the AASM within two weeks of your application date.
Since our center is a center member of the AASM, am I also considered an AASM member since I am on staff at the center?
No. Center and individual memberships are different and require separate applications, and both categories of membership have their own unique benefits. Membership in one category does not mean you are considered a member of another category.
