The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) produces consensus-based papers in response to current issues of concern in the field of sleep medicine. These topics involve limited scientific evidence.
The papers are based on the clinical evidence found in an appropriate literature search and on a review of any available non-published sources. A writing group then analyzes this evidence and forms a consensus based on their collective expertise.
The papers undergo peer review by outside reviewers before they are submitted to the AASM Board of Directors for approval.
